'An organisation providing cycle sport in a safe, exciting and supportive environment, professionally managed and financially strong.'
The Nelson Cycling Club dates back to January 1935 however photos in the Provincial Museum record cycling on Trafalgar Park before the turn of the 19th century.
Over the years the club has 'produced' many national champions - some going on to international honours (including a World Champion). Whilst the club is extremely proud of the achievements of these athletes it is also very proud of it's record of introducing a sport to a number of 'at risk' youth in our region.
The club, over the years, has procured a number of 'idle' bikes, which are then made available to novice riders who are provided with the opportunity to be involved with the sport.
Our team of coaches, mentors and officials are all nationally qualified and are available to ensure all riders are given the best of advice and support to enable them to get the most from their participation.
With the risk of accidents increasing on the road the club caters for novice riders, an introductory programme providing cycling skills. Based at the Saxton Velodrome riders develop bike-handling skills which in time will equip them for their move to the roads.
In addition to providing a calendar of races, road and track, Cycling Nelson is also involved in various community events, which promote cycling, safety, and lifestyle.
Cycling Nelson aims to:
- provide the community with opportunities to participate in safe, well organised events either as riders or marshalls
- provide advice, coaching and support to develop cycling skills.
- promote the sport of cycling to encourage increased participation.
